This tour begins at one of the most colorful and emblematic places in all of Oaxaca. This gigantic market, located 35 minutes east of Oaxaca City, is the largest and considered the oldest indigenous “tianguis” (market) in the state in Oaxaca state. The Tlacolula market is located in an ancient Zapotec settlement, a place that has served for centuries as the weekly market for residents from nearby and faraway villages to visit on Sundays to buy and sell goods. During our walk through the market, we will sample regional food, fresh fruits (some of which you are likely seeing for the first time), fried grasshoppers (optional!), egg bread, and refreshing drinks such as herbal tea, honey water and corn-based tepache. For the carnivores among us, we can also sample a variety of grilled meats. In addition to the colorful presentation of fruits and vegetable and the delicious aroma of cooked foods, you will see local residents in traditional clothing and speaking in Zapotec language. The embroidery design and colors on the aprons are unique to each village.
Our visit to the market and temple will last approximately 2 to 3 hours.
